DESCRIPTION:JACK IN THE GREEN The Revival of an Old May Day Tradition In 2015 an attempt was made to revive one of England’s oldest folk customs. Some say The Jack in the Green dates back to pagan times\, no-one knows for sure. What is certain was that this colourful custom accompanied by a parade of extravagantly dressed chimney sweeps was alive and flourishing in England in the 18th\, 19th and early 20th centuries. Through video and song we follow the story of this audacious attempt to bring this peculiar British custom back to the streets of Gloucestershire whilst learning about other strange English customs that continue to this very day.

DESCRIPTION:The force is strong at the Museum of Gloucester!\nOn Saturday 24 June 2023\, from a galaxy far\, far away comes an absolute must see for fans of Star Wars and the silver screen… \nOne of the UK’s finest collections of vintage Star Wars toys and original cinema posters is going to go on display in a stunning exhibition brought to you by the Museum of Gloucester. \nBack in 1977 when the movie Star Wars broke box office records\, no one could have predicted that the merchandising would go on to earn even more than the film itself. The toys and merchandise of the film took the world by storm and became the must-have playthings for an entire generation. From 1977 to 1985\, an estimated 300 million action figures were sold\, allowing children to re-enact the adventures of Luke Skywalker\, Princess Leia and Han Solo. \nMay The Toys Be With You is both a celebration of the now highly collectable vintage toy line and also of the iconic design work and art of the Star Wars movies. From X-Wing Fighters to lightsabers\, these fantastical designs have fired our imaginations and stamped their place on our cultural landscape. For little kids and ‘big kids’ alike\, this is an unmissable opportunity to view many rarely seen Star Wars treasures. On Wednesday 31st May Jonathan’s Jungle Roadshow is joining us for two\, 90-minute informative sessions at 11am and 1pm. The sessions sold out last time so book now to secure your place. \nMuseum visitors with an annual ticket or Canal & River Trust Membership can book a session with Jonathan’s road show jungle onboard our boat Sabrina 5\, a fully-accessible floating classroom. \n Tickets are £6 per child which includes up to one adult for free. Any additional adults will need to buy a ticket as space is limited.\n The session is suitable for age 4 and up – the 90-minute session might not be suitable for younger children.\n Children need to be accompanied by an adult throughout.\n The 90-minute sessions will run at 11am and 1pm\n To book your place email gwm@canalrivertrust.org.uk with the session time you would like and the number of children and adults in your group. DESCRIPTION:The event celebrates 50 years after the square was first opened in 1972\, and aims to showcase the square as an events space by featuring lighting displays\, dance performances and a dramatic high wire walk. \nThroughout the day there will be a buzz of performances and free circus skills activities for children and young people\, as well as a new show from hip-hop contemporary dance group\, Avant Garde. SCRUM\, is a 35-minute immersive experience merging dance with virtual reality and will invite visitors to scan the QR codes to view the hidden virtual layers. \nIn the evening\, onlookers can enjoy a specially commissioned new collaboration between Gloucester based Strike a Light and Avant Garde\, who have worked with 125 dancers across the city on a vibrant new performance. \nThe evening will culminate in a breathtaking show called Wave at the Moon\, which has been created for the launch about the relationship between the moon and the tidal bore. It’s a collaboration between Cirque Bijou and the Bullzini High Wire Company who’ve performed in both national and international festivals and will feature wire walker Chris Bullzini\, aerialist Eloise Currie and musicians Michael Fergie and Tilly Chester.
