SUMMARY:Bee Fearless - Speak Up - Stay Safe
DESCRIPTION:A thought-provoking sculpture is making a beeline for Gloucester from 16 – 20 February to spark discussions with young people about the dangers of weapons and violence\, and to encourage people to become active bystanders. \nMade from weapons seized off the streets\, this unique monument is the creation of the British Ironwork Centre and will be a catalyst for conversations among young people about crime and violence. The Bee marks one year since the Knife Angel came to Gloucester Cathedral\, when the resulting conversations contributed to a 50% increase in information about criminal activity being reported through Crimestoppers at that time. The independent charity provides young people with a safe place to give information about crime 100% anonymously. The Bee’s tour of the city and county aims to encourage people to speak up – particularly if they’re worried about a friend or sibling involved in violence or in danger of being drawn into violence. \nFunded by the Knife Angel Legacy Fund\, Crimestoppers and Gloucester BID\, the Bee is being supported by partners across the city of Gloucester and Gloucestershire\, including: The Hollie Gazzard Trust\, The Music Works\, Hundred Heroines\, Gloucester CitySafe\, Nettl\, 1st Call Plant Ltd\, Gloucestershire College and Hartpury University and College. \nThe Bee will tour the city from Friday 16 February. Its journey begins in Kings Square alongside the Music Works Bus and an emotive exhibition ‘Malevolence’\, put together by Hundred Heroines in Kings Walk\, which is highlighting different aspects of gender-based violence. It will then buzz to Gloucester Cathedral Green on Saturday 17 February\, where it’ll be accompanied by the Music Works Bus\, free Bee themed craft activities and the Hollie Gazzard Trust. The Hollie Gazzard Trust was created following the murder of Hollie Gazzard in 2014 by an abusive ex-partner\, and campaigns against gender-based violence and knife crime. The arrival of The Bee comes at a significant time for the city of Gloucester as it marks the 10th anniversary of the 20-year-old’s death. \nThe last chance for the public to view The Bee will be at the Docks on Sunday 18 February\, before it visits educational sites across the county to continue to deliver its anti-violence message. A programme of community-based activities will accompany its time in Gloucester\, including a bee trail across the city. A dedicated website will provide key information about the Anti-Violence Bee Monument\, as well as the events scheduled to support the aim of education and awareness. \nCanon Rebecca Lloyd\, Canon Chancellor and Director of Learning and Participation at Gloucester Cathedral said: \n“It’s a great privilege for us at Gloucester Cathedral to be hosting the Bee. We were blown away by the response to Knife Angel last year and its positive impact on our local community and have been administering the Knife Angel Legacy Fund with our partners to continue the work of youth violence prevention. As part of the Legacy\, we recently hosted two Youth Action Summits to bring together young people and partners from across the city to look at how we make Gloucester a safer and better place for young people to be. We are now looking forward to bringing the Bee to Gloucester and to further action and improve the safety and lives of all of us here. Please do come and see the Bee and get involved in the Knife Angel’s legacy of greater peace and safety for all on our streets and in our homes.” \nThe Knife Angel Legacy Fund was set up to ensure vital work around raising awareness and preventing violent crime in Gloucestershire can continue. You can donate to the fund here. \nFurther information about the monument is available on the official British Ironwork website. \nImage credit: British Ironwork Centre

He incorporated illumination into his pieces about 25 years ago and has subsequently built up a flourishing production studio producing sculptures\, installations and architectural lighting design. Artist\, Jack Wimperis says “It has been great to work with local business to animate Westgate Street and learn about the historic features on Westgate Street”. \nRun by Gloucester City Council and funded by Historic England\, Cathedral Quarter is breathing new life into Westgate Street by restoring historic buildings and bringing empty properties back into use. Gloucester Council’s HSHAZ team approached the Bright Nights to develop Windows Though Time through time to illuminate architectural features on Westgate Street buildings. \n (c) Andre Pattenden

SUMMARY:Steampunks of Gloucestershire
DESCRIPTION:This Summer our Steampunk Festival celebrates characters from Quartermain\, Fogg\, and van Helsing to Randolph and John Carter\, to Holmes and Adèle Blanc-Sec\, and all those other extraordinary gentlefolk.\n\nAs well as our Market full of intriguing and beautiful objects there will be a whole host of Talks\, activities for all the kids and our Usual Cafe and Bar open to enjoy fun in the Sun.\n\nThe Great thing is that it’s free!!\n\n\nWhat is Steampunk?\nSteampunk is a celebration of the 19thc origins of Science Fiction.\n\nAlthough the name “Steampunk” is 20th century\, the style and form of Steampunk goes back to the earliest 19th-century authors who created the genre of Science Fiction. Those first authors were writing in the dawn light of the Industrial Revolution\, a time of infinite possibilities and infinite change. As time went on their fiction became not only speculation but inspiration\, and warnings\, to future generations.

SUMMARY:Folk Talks - Jack in the Green
DESCRIPTION:JACK IN THE GREEN The Revival of an Old May Day Tradition In 2015 an attempt was made to revive one of England’s oldest folk customs. Some say The Jack in the Green dates back to pagan times\, no-one knows for sure. What is certain was that this colourful custom accompanied by a parade of extravagantly dressed chimney sweeps was alive and flourishing in England in the 18th\, 19th and early 20th centuries. Through video and song we follow the story of this audacious attempt to bring this peculiar British custom back to the streets of Gloucestershire whilst learning about other strange English customs that continue to this very day.

SUMMARY:May The Toys Be With You
DESCRIPTION:The force is strong at the Museum of Gloucester!\nOn Saturday 24 June 2023\, from a galaxy far\, far away comes an absolute must see for fans of Star Wars and the silver screen… \nOne of the UK’s finest collections of vintage Star Wars toys and original cinema posters is going to go on display in a stunning exhibition brought to you by the Museum of Gloucester. \nBack in 1977 when the movie Star Wars broke box office records\, no one could have predicted that the merchandising would go on to earn even more than the film itself. The toys and merchandise of the film took the world by storm and became the must-have playthings for an entire generation. From 1977 to 1985\, an estimated 300 million action figures were sold\, allowing children to re-enact the adventures of Luke Skywalker\, Princess Leia and Han Solo. \nMay The Toys Be With You is both a celebration of the now highly collectable vintage toy line and also of the iconic design work and art of the Star Wars movies. From X-Wing Fighters to lightsabers\, these fantastical designs have fired our imaginations and stamped their place on our cultural landscape. For little kids and ‘big kids’ alike\, this is an unmissable opportunity to view many rarely seen Star Wars treasures. This exhibition has broken visitor attendance records at a host of museums around the country and we’re now getting excited for its visit to Gloucester. \nThe exhibition runs from Saturday 24 June until Saturday 30 September 2023 – please see the museum website for all opening hours. On Saturday 24 June\, please note that we are also inviting the fabulous Gloucestershire Troopers to ‘open’ the exhibition for us and be around the city centre welcoming visitors to Gloucester and the museum itself on the opening day…why not put your best Sar Wars inspired outfit on and join us for this exciting day! \nBooking tickets online in advance is essential to secure your place to see this exhibition! \nAdults – £6 | Seniors – £4.50 | Ages 18-25 – £3.50 | Under 18s – £2.50.
