Celebrating the anniversaries of Gloucester twinning with Trier and Metz

Gloucester City Council Mayor will be planting a tree in Gloucester Park to celebrate the city’s twinning with Trier in Germany and Metz in France. 

This year Gloucester city is celebrating two anniversaries with its partner cities in Europe.

2017 marks the 60^th anniversary of the Gloucester twinning with Germany’s oldest city, Trier, which is on the River Moselle near Luxembourg, and the 50^thanniversary with Metz  in north-eastern France.

To celebrate the anniversaries a commemorative tree and plaque will be unveiled at Gloucester Park on Friday 19^th May.

Gloucester City Council and GlosLinks manage the partnerships and have welcomed hundreds of incoming twin town visitors over the years.  A GlosLinks group will be visiting Trier and Metz in July where a programme of anniversary events has been planned. Gloucester will also be marking the event by holding a small exhibition on twinning in St Michael’s Tower for a month from the second week in June.

Cllr Neil Hampson, Mayor of Gloucester City Council, said: “It will be an honour to plant the tree at Gloucester Park and celebrate our partnerships with these two twin towns.”

A spokesperson from GlosLinks, said:  “This tree will be a symbol of the friendship that has existed for so long now between Gloucester, Trier and Metz.”
