parking-coches

As part of a £750,000 investment in the city’s Eastgate Shopping Centre car park, work is well underway to repair the damaged road surface and install the new ‘pay on foot’ parking system.

The new system allows customers to pay for their parking once they’ve finished enjoying their time in the city, rather than feeling the need to rush back before their ticket runs out.

In addition to the ‘pay on foot’ payment machines, users who are paying by contactless debit or credit card will be able to ‘wave and pay’ on entry and exit. A sensor will register the payment allowing the customer to visit the car park without having to receive a ticket at the machine.

The ‘pay on foot’ parking systems will be supported by using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) allowing disabled users to pre-register their vehicles and drive into the car park hassle free. The ANPR system will automatically recognise the registered vehicle and the barrier will rise, on both entrance and exit.

In order to carry out the resurfacing of the roof, all but one pay and display machine has had to be removed. The increased use of the one machine has caused a few issues with payment, but staff are making regular checks to make sure payments can be made.

Cllr Paul James, leader of Gloucester City Council and cabinet member for regeneration and economy, said: “We’re committed to making our city centre as attractive and convenient as possible for our residents and visitors.

“We know there have been a few problems with payment on the one remaining machine, but if anyone has any problems they can call the number in the car park and speak to our staff who will be able to help them.

“I’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused while we carry out these much needed improvements, and thank people for their patience.”
