Koyash Meah and his brother Abdul Qayyum Meah organised the event at Spice house on Barnwood Road with a team of hard-working volunteers on November 21.
More than 200 guests attended and Councillor Shamsuz Zaman Litu (Con, Barton and Tredworth), the city’s first councillor of Bangladeshi origin, said volunteers pulled out all the stops by working through the night until 5am to ensure everyone was fully catered for and that the afternoon event went smoothly.
He said the atmosphere in the restaurant was amazing and everyone seemed to have really enjoyed the delicious food.
And he added it was fantastic to see so many family, friends and elders from the Bangladeshi community and wider community as well as several distinguished guests too.
Gloucester MP Richard Graham, Police Crime Commissioner Chris Nelson, city council leader Richard Cook and Mayor Collette Finnegan were among those who attended along with several councillors, Bangladeshi TV and Radio presenter Misbah Jamal, Nahida Misbah, Sheikh Misbah who travelled from London.
Cllr Litu said: “It is an immense privilege and honour to have been elected as the first ever Gloucester City councillor of Bangladeshi origin.
“I would like to say a big thanks to my family, friends and everyone who helped me with the campaign and also those who put their faith in me in the local elections in May.
“I promise to continue working hard for Barton & Tredworth alongside our MP Richard Graham, my colleague Cllr Sajid Patel and all my other colleagues on the city council.
“I will not let the community down and do my best to speak out and represent my constituents and the area to the best of my ability”
