Huge Weekend for Gloucester as SoMAC festival by Kate | Gloucester News Centre - http://gloucesternewscentre.co.uk/This week sees Gloucester’s Summer of Music, Arts and Culture off to a walloping start for all.
This weekend we welcome pianos on the streets, Peter Rabbit and his friends into the city and a thoroughly jammed-packed start to SoMAC.
Keep your eyes peeled for the beautifully painted pianos popping up in Gloucester. Students of Gloucestershire College have designed and painted a number of pianos that will bring music to the streets of Gloucester over the summer. – the pianos are signed ‘tickle my ivories’. Go on! Have a go
Join Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle Duck on the miniature trail around Gloucester and celebrate 150th anniversary of Beatrix Potter birth. Grab your trail map from Gloucester’s award winning Tourist Information Centre, seek out the characters hidden in various places around Gloucester, collect all 20 stickers and receive a prize from the House of the Tailor of Gloucester.
Various music will be heard in Gloucester this weekend ranging from The Battle of the Bands Final, where the four finalists battle it out to see who wins a slot at the Underground Festival this Saturday in Gloucester Guildhall (doors open at 19.30 FREE ENTRY), to Cheltenham Music Festival in the Gem of the Cotswolds, Gloucester Cathedral playing host to Holst and Howells this Saturday, with Herbert Howells’ Cello Concerto being played in the building that the Gloucestershire-born composer came of age musically.
Also Saturday is Gloucester’s Grand Slam from 11.00 at St Mary de Crypt – as Bristol’s poetry slam come to the city.
The fun runs into Sunday with Gloucester’s 10K and CityFest in Gloucester Park. Once again, One Church, is putting on a spectacular FREE event in Gloucester Park – filled with bouncy castles, live music donkey rides and lots more.
If all this is too energetic then the Museum of Gloucester is exhibiting an extraordinary collection of artwork by Artist PJ Crook.
Jason Smith Chief Executive of Marketing Gloucester commented “We are off to a tremendously exciting start to our SoMAC festival and the city is going to be humming with and extraordinary number of world class events taken place this launch weekend. This is just a taster of what is lined up for this summer and I am confident that there is going to be something to appeal to everyone, whatever their background, age or taste. It is great that with the support of Arts Council England and a whole range of Partners that an event of such impact can be brought to Gloucester”
Councillor Lise Noakes, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure said “The SoMAC festival is really going to put Gloucester on the cultural map”.
