Keep your business safe from fire

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) is offering businesses free fire safety advice to help keep their premises and employees safe as part of Business Safety Week 2019.

The National Fire Chiefs Council’s (NFCC) campaign runs from 9-15 September and aims to provide those responsible for businesses and public buildings, including those with sleeping accommodation nearby or above them, with information and advice to reduce the number of fire incidents, arson attacks and false alarms in the workplace.

The week encourages all businesses to make sure they have taken the steps required by law to protect their business and employees from fire. Fires due to electrical faults or misuse of electrical equipment increase during the Christmas period.

The lead-up to Christmas can be a busy time for businesses so GFRS is calling on people to take the opportunity now to review risk assessments and escape plans as they may take on extra stock and new or seasonal staff.

Cllr Dave Norman, cabinet member with responsibility for the Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Fires can have a devastating effect on businesses so we want to ensure they have taken the necessary steps to protect their premises and employees.

“This is particularly important in the run-up to Christmas so please follow the advice as it could save a life and your business.”

Wayne Bowcock, chief fire officer, said: “We are committed to supporting businesses in the county to reduce their fire risk. We want them to thrive in a safe and sustainable way and to follow the law so please get in touch for further fire safety advice.”

NFCC’s Protection and Business Safety vice chair Guy Keen said: “About one third of fires in the workplace are caused by electrical faults and misuse of electrical equipment. We know that many small businesses never recover from the damage caused by fire so I would urge them to find out how to make their premises and their staff safer.”
