Pam Tracey elected as new Gloucester sheriff by Shaun Moore | Gloucester News Centre - http://gloucesternewscentre.co.uk/Gloucester’s new sheriff Pam Tracey has called on councillors to stop bickering and wants them to come together to work for the city again.
The Westgate councillor, who was sheriff and deputy mayor in 2002, has been elected to the position again.
The Conservative Party councillor was voted on Thursday night after the recent resignation of Clive Walford who held the position for just a few months.
Conservative and Labour councillors backed her nomination but the Liberal Democrats abstained.
“We are never going to get anywhere if we don’t work together,” she said.
“We cannot keep going on like this.
“I would like to thank the members of this council who voted for me.
“The fact is we’ve got to bring this city back together. We don’t want to be a council that is bickering and bantering all the time.
“This dear mayor has gone through hell and back and has been doing the sheriff’s job as well as the mayor’s job.
“We need a proper office for this civic position. We need to get back together to how it used to be and keep this city alive.”
She said her main ambition is to promote the city of Gloucester further afield.
“It’s a wonderful city but we don’t want to be go around arguing with one another,” she said.
“I know we’ve got our good and bad in the council but we need to sometimes all get together.
“We must keep this tradition going because we’ve only got 15 sheriffs left in this country.
“God bless you all.”
Cllr Tracey was first elected to the city council in 1992 and has received an MBE for her work in the community.
She also represents Hempsted and Westgate on Gloucestershire County Council.
Throughout her career in local politics, she has paid special attention to the homeless and unemployed and worked to protect the heritage and future prospects of Westgate.
