The exhibition featuring the reconstructed head of Richard III in Gloucester has been hailed as a huge success.
Part of a national tour the exhibition at the City Museum and Art Gallery was visited by nearly 3,000 people. And the museum’s website received a total of 17,000 ‘hits’.
“ It has been a massive success,” said Council Leader, Paul James. “It shows not only that we can stage great exhibitions but how much interest there is in the City and its history. When exhibitions are relevant and staged well people will come and see them. Richard III had a profound influence on Gloucester and the interest in this exhibition has been immense.”
Comments have included those from visitors who have also seen the exhibition when it was staged at York and the British Museum. They praised the presentation, the information on the interpretation boards and the use of the original ‘charters.’
All of the talks staged during the exhibition were sold out. In particular one given by the Mayor, Councillor Chris Chatterton, was so popular that two more had to be organized to cope with the demand.
Added Councillor James: “Our staff worked extremely hard to put on this exhibition and to have it compared so favourably with York and the standards of the British Museum is a fantastic achievement for them.
“ Thanks must go not only to the museum staff, but to our tourism team, Marketing Gloucester, the Mayor, Councillor Sebastian Field, and local MP Richard Graham who all contributed to the success of this event.”
