Customers at Gloucester’s new Gallery Westgate could take a gamble on buying potentially valuable art by famous painters.

The gallery and antiques shop at 64 Westgate Street, is full of paintings which have been bought at auction by the owner who is passionate about art from all over the world. Current pieces include copies and possible originals by famous artists including Marc Chagall.

Promising, ‘a world of aesthetic pleasure and profitable investment,’ gallery owner, Vadim Shaporto is inviting people to visit his collection which includes unusual old and modern paintings by international artists from Australian, Hungarian, Russian, Spanish, German. Some of the collection includes copies of styles by artists such as Kandinsky and Constable.

His carefully curated collection is the result of over 10 years of collecting. He said, ‘I have always appreciated art and spent a lot of time in art museums all over the world. I started buying at auction in 2011 and it’s always a surprise; you never know what you’ll find. You can find bargains, but the problem is researching if something is an original or a copy. Some collectors like the works, but for others they want proof of its origin. However, art is probably the best investment right now.’

Vadim, who is from Eastern Europe, now lives in the Forest of Dean. He has an online portfolio but decided to open his shop on Westgate Street for people to see the art properly. He said, ‘I looked at a lot of places, including Cheltenham, but I like the area of Westgate. I want people to come and have a look, like a museum; people are always welcome!’

Gloucester BID manager Emily Gibbon said, ‘It’s wonderful to welcome a new business, especially with an owner who is so passionate about his offer. It’s a different experience on the high street where people can come to look at a lovely gallery in a beautiful historic building.’
