Gloucester City Council’s returning officer is encouraging people to make their voice heard by registering their right to vote, in a new online video message.

A video created by Jon McGinty, the returning officer at Gloucester City Council highlights the reasons why people who live in Gloucester should make sure they can have their say on Thursday 5th May when the polls open.

The newly released video, which can be found at www.gloucester.gov.uk on ‘Elections 2016’ page, reminds residents that voting registration closes on 18th April 2016 and encourages anyone who is not yet registered to do so before it’s too late.

On Thursday 5th May 72 polling stations will open up across the city for Gloucester’s ‘all out’ election, but people need to register their right to vote first.

The ‘all out’ elections that are happening in May mean that all 39 city councillors will be elected at the same time, instead of a third every year as in the past. This means that city elections will now be held once every four years.

Registering your vote doesn’t take long and is done easily online at www.gov.uk/register-to vote and it can be done at any time.

If you do not have access to the internet you can call the elections office on 01452 396203 to register.

You will need the following information:

*   Current and previous address
*   Date of birth
*   National insurance number (If you do not know your NI number you should contact the elections office)
If you want to have a postal vote then the deadline to return an application form is Tuesday 19th April at 5pm.

Mr McGinty said: “How the council provides its services affects everyone in the city in one way or another. If you want a say in who represents your interests and decides how your council tax is spent, you need to use your vote.

“Everyone deserves the right to have their say in the ‘all out’ elections in May, but if you’re not registered you can’t vote. It only takes a few minutes to register so please don’t miss your opportunity.”
