DESCRIPTION:The Lantern Parade & Christmas Light Switch-On is back this year! Enchanted Winter Forest lanterns will light the streets of Gloucester to mark the start of the Festive season!  \nKicking off the celebrations you can join the Gloucester Cathedral carol service at 4pm\, which will be followed by the lantern parade at 4:45pm which will wind through the city centre culminating in the magical Tree of Light switch on in Kings Square. \nFREE Lantern making Workshops \nIf you would like to take part in the parade\, there are free lantern making workshops at Folk of Gloucester Saturday 9th November 11am – 3pm & Eastgate Shopping Centre Saturday 16th November 2pm – 4pm. Workshops are free and open to all ages. \nFather Christmas and the rousing Gloster Gladiators Scout Band will lead the parade\, bringing musical cheer and greeting families as they pass. As the parade arrives\, the Tree of Light in Kings Square will have ceremonial switch on as part of the annual Rotary club fundraiser. Incredible vehicles from the 1900s through the Roaring Twenties and the War Years to the gleaming chrome of the fifties\, the iconic designs of the Swinging Sixties\, sports cars from the eighties and an instant nostalgia hit from nineties classics. \nThere’s an amazing array of nautical activities at Retro on the Water from boat trips to aquatic displays. There’s delicious food and drink aplenty\, as well as vintage fashion and shopping. \nFor music and dance enthusiasts\, visit the Mariners Square Stage where you’ll be serenaded by a host of retro acts and get your boogie on with swing dancing.​ We’ve also got 80’s Cheese and Cool Britannia-inspired 90s music over on our Kings Square stage\, overseen by the incredible young musicians of The Music Works. \n​There is so much to see and do at Gloucester Goes Retro\, don’t miss it!

Take part in the glowing lantern parade celebrating the 12 days of Christmas\, watch the Tree of Light Ceremony with a little love in Kings Square\, or join the singing and hear Gloucester Cathedral Carol Service a ringing. \nMake your own lantern – Eastgate shopping Centre – 1-4pm  \nIf you want to join the parade you are welcome to drop into this lantern making workshop to make your own 12 days of Christmas themed lantern. Sponsored by Gloucester BID\, the lantern workshops will be in Eastgate shopping centre between 1-4pm. \nLantern Procession & Christmas Lights Switch on – 4.40pm \nWe see the return of the Lantern Procession and Christmas Lights Illumination on 18 November\, starting at 4.40pm in Southgate Street. Children across 6 primary schools this year have drawn upon the theme of the ’12 days of Christmas’\, an array of illuminated lanterns\, pipers piping\, and flying gold rings\, will form a parade. Pupils from 6 Gloucester schools taking part this year are: Meadowside Primary School\, The Altus School\, Coney Hill Community Primary School\, Field Court C of E Infant Academy\, Dinglewell Junior School\, and Kingsway Primary School. \nFor the first time the parade route will include Kings Square. Happenings along the parade route include the Christmas light switch on at 4.50pm at the Cross\, illuminating the gate streets.
