Do you know where Gloucester’s hidden bridge is?

The county council is upgrading a hidden bridge in the Barton area of Gloucester as part of its continued investment in local roads.

The bridge, which carries people over the River Twyver on Derby Road, is reaching the end of its life and will be replaced with a brand new bridge that can cope with heavier vehicles.

The new improved Derby Road bridge will be strong enough to carry up to 40 tonnes – the equivalent weight of three double decker buses. The work is part of the county council’s ongoing investment in Gloucestershire’s roads and will reduce the need for structural maintenance work in the future.

Replacing a bridge is a complex and technical project, which means the scheme is expected to last up to six weeks, starting from 13^th March. To protect the public, a 10 metre section of Derby Road, from Derby Court to the Norville Factory entrance will be closed at all times throughout the scheme.

To help avoid delays during this essential work a diversion route suitable for heavy vehicles will be signposted through Barton Street, Eastern Avenue, Barnwood Road, London Road and Horton Road and vice versa. However the majority of vehicles will be able to find shorter routes. Pedestrian access will be maintained over the bridge throughout.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood said: “I’m sure there are many residents and road users who, until now, were unaware that beneath Derby Road lies a concealed bridge that plays a major role in the local road network.

“It’s crucial we replace the bridge, however these are no ordinary road works. The skill and expertise of our engineers will be required to replace the structure with a brand new bridge that will keep this route moving for years to come.”

Cllr Jasminder Gill, county councillor for Barton and Tredworth said: “Replacing this bridge is essential, and will mean the road stays safe and well maintained into the future. I would like to thank residents in advance for their patience while this complex work is underway.”
