Gloucester Business Improvement District (BID) is urging people to think local this Mother’s Day as it highlights the power of the city’s local gift card to support Gloucester businesses.

Almost £150,000 of Gloucester Gift Cards have been sold to date, with over £63,000 in sales in 2025, up 63% on 2024. The introduction of the digital version of the Gloucester Gift Card is also sending sales of the card soaring, with digital sales trebling between 2024 and 2025.

A new sales point was introduced at Gloucester Quays in 2024, adding a host of national brands to the Gloucester Gift Card like M&S, Next, White Stuff and Cineworld, and taking the total number of national and independent businesses accepting the card to over 170.

Mother’s Day is a major purchasing occasion in the UK with Mintel suggesting that consumer spending hit £1,673m in 2025, and the Gift Card & Voucher Association (GCVA) reporting that 7.9% of consumers purchased a gift card for the occasion. The occasion had an impact in the city too, with over £6,000 of Gloucester Gift Cards sold in March 2025 alone.

Gloucester’s gift card was introduced by Gloucester BID in November 2019 as a way to encourage local shopping and keep spend locked into the area.

The strong sales figures for the Gloucester Gift Card follow other positive news for the city, including the announcement of the city’s first Monopoly board which will feature key locations in Gloucester, and the arrival of the new University of Gloucester city campus in the former Debenhams Store.

Claire Knight, Marketing & Business Engagement Lead at Gloucester BID said: “Civic pride in Gloucester is strong, and we’re proud to see the Gloucester Gift Card continue to go from strength to strength as a means for people to show their love for the city and its businesses. The 63,000 cards sold in 2025 represents over 2200 visits into the city, driving real footfall and spend in Gloucester.

“This Mother’s Day, by choosing the Gloucester Gift Card for your mum or mother figure, you’re not only giving your mum huge choice with over 170 amazing local businesses to spend with, you’re ensuring that money is locked into Gloucester, powering our community.”
