Gloucester will mark World Happiness Day with the switch-on of a new light installation to illuminate the iconic Kyneburgh Tower.
The 16-metre-tall artwork in Kimbrose Square, is set to be lit up as part of Bright Nights, a series of light installations that brighten the city’s streets, funded by Gloucester City Council and Gloucester BID.
The tower will be illuminated at a special switch-on at 7.30pm on Friday, 20 March and members of the public are invited to attend.
The dynamic light installation has been created by local artists Helena Doyle and Jonathan Katona who are based at Jolt, a creative hub, based in Kings Square
They were commissioned to bring to life the Kyneburgh Tower, a sculpture by Tom Price inspired by the story St Kyneburgh and the well.
Artist Jonathan Katona said: “Our vision is to complement the tower as an original artwork standing on a sacred spot, and highlight what Gloucester already has to offer: a rich tapestry of history and art.”
The artwork is one of two light installations commissioned through Together Gloucester, and shaped by responses to the council’s public consultation on improving safety across the city.
The second installation will be unveiled at Gloucester Park’s bandstand later in the year.
Councillor Caroline Courtney said: “These light installations will not only bring beauty and light to our city streets but also support our public art strategy which aims to inspire pride in our residents and attract visitors and businesses to Gloucester. It’s fantastic to see creative projects delivering long-lasting impact, bringing together our communities’ call for safer streets with innovation and artistic excellence.”
The launch event will feature interactive light experiences, and a countdown to the first official illumination.
