Gloucestershire County Council is starting improvement work on Elmbridge roundabout on 22nd August, thanks to £9m government funding.

Later this month, significant work will begin on the Elmbridge roundabout in Gloucester. The roundabout is one of the busiest junctions in the county, the much needed improvements will help relieve congestion, save commuters time and allow traffic to flow smoother.

Work will start on Elmbridge roundabout on 22nd August 2016, with completion expected in September 2017.

Once completed, Elmbridge roundabout will have a new straight-on ‘hamburger lane’, a widening of the approach lanes and the latest traffic signal technology.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways said, “I’d like to thank people in advance for their patience whilst we carry out these improvements. We’ll be doing all we can to reduce disruption to people’s journeys and ask them to bear with us whilst this much needed work is being done.

“The council is working to cut congestion wherever we can. That’s not just good for motorists – it’s good for Gloucestershire businesses, helping us protect and create jobs in our county.”

The first phase of the improvements, which will last approximately six weeks, will see a 24 hour closure of the inner ring of the roundabout with single lane closures on all approach lanes.

While the work takes place on the roundabout every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum. Lane closures on the approach roads will only appear when absolutely necessary to allow the construction work to take place.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys during the first six weeks of the work as a 24hr inner ring lane closure with be in place on the roundabout so that the ‘straight-on’ lane can be built.

More details and traffic advice will be issued nearer the time.
