Longlevens children will be benefitting from over £7,500 of funding from local county councillor Kathy Williams.
Cllr Williams has used part of her funding from the council’s Active Together grant to support a number of projects in her ward.
The Active Together grant is used to encourage more sport and physical activity across the county and enables communities the control to create their own opportunities to get active and healthy together.
Over £1,700 of the money has been used by Longlevens Junior School to create a community story garden. This offers an environment to help early years children, school children, vulnerable families and elderly members of the community to get involved in gardening as well as actively learning outdoors.
A further £740 of funding has been used to invest in outdoor equipment for the Longlevens Children’s Hub, operated by Longlevens Junior School.
The hub is a purpose built building set in the grounds of Longlevens Junior School which offers Early Years Playgroup for children aged 2-4 (called Playdays) and a before and after school club for children aged 4-11 (Longlevens Out of School Club).
The funding for these two initiatives follows an investment of £5,000 at Longlevens Infant School to build a Trim Trail to help children with developmental needs or physical disability take part in the activities alongside other pupils.
Fiona Bradshaw, Hub Manager at Longlevens Junior School, said, “The money we have received from the Active Together grant has made a huge positive impact upon the early years children. We have used the grant to set up our setting Gardening Club, soon we will be inviting our local residents into the setting to sample our tasty produce and have a story in the garden using our beautifully crafted story telling chair.”
Kerry Cunningham, Head Teacher at Longlevens Infant School, said: “The Trim trail we have had installed with the grant money we received is fantastic as it is accessible and fully inclusive. The children love playing on the equipment and are very excited when it is their class’ turn to go on.
“Equally when it is used as part of the PE and outdoor learning curriculum the children are enthusiastic and motivated. The grant has enabled more children to get active at our school and we are really thrilled with the result.”
Cllr Kathy Williams (Longlevens, Con), said: “I was delighted to offer my support to help with these schemes in Longlevens.
“They offer a really great environment for children and young people in the area to play, learn and develop. This investment will help them to get even more youngsters involved in the work they do.
“The Active Together fund is a great way for councillors to support the communities we represent, and help improve the health and wellbeing of residents.”
