Moat Primary School working hard to improve  

The Matson based school is taking immediate action to improve pupil progress and drive up the quality of teaching.

 

In July, Ofsted inspectors rated the school as inadequate, putting them into ‘special measures’. Staff and governors are now working closely with Gloucestershire County Council to set out a plan to improve standards.

 

The report praised the efforts made by the new executive headteacher to improve pupils’ behaviour. They noted the new systems that had been established were working well, and that staff were making sure they were followed.

 

There was also praise for the improvements to the way that pupils are taught phonics and that these had seen standards raise.

 

Ofsted highlighted the need for the school to:

 

• Improve the quality of teaching and learning through regular training in perceived weaker areas.
• Improve the standards of pupil’s output, both in terms of presentation and content.
• Improve leadership and management by regularly monitoring the quality of teaching and learning throughout the year and taking action quickly to tackle any weaknesses.

 

Executive Headteacher, Tim Cooper, said; “The staff, board of governors and I are absolutely committed to providing the best possible education for all our pupils.

 

“We are obviously disappointed in the report’s findings. However, I am certain that, with the support of governors, staff, the county council and our parents, we will rapidly make the changes identified in Ofsted’s report.

 

“We want to deliver the highest quality education to every one of our pupils so that they can achieve their best and we become a stronger school as a result.”

 

Judith Sales, Chair of governors at Moat Primary School, said: “We are working hard to address the issues highlighted by the report.

 

“With the efforts of staff and the continued support of our parents, I am sure that we will be able to follow Ofsted’s recommendations and rapidly improve the standards of this school.”

 

A team from the county council will now work closely with the school to address the issues identified by Ofsted.

 

Jane Lloyd-Davies, head of education performance and intervention at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “We will continue to give the school all the support they need.

 

“We are working closely with the executive headteacher, staff and board of governors to make sure there is a clear and comprehensive plan in place, so that the quality of teaching is consistently good and, most importantly, the rate of pupil progress increases rapidly.”
