Online chlamydia testing available in Gloucestershire

Did you know chlamydia testing is available online for people to order and test themselves at home?

Many people prefer to access sexual health information and services online because of the anonymity it provides. That’s why the county council, working with Gloucestershire Care Services NHS Trust (GCS) is promoting the online testing service to try to encourage more people to test themselves.

To order a simple free testing kit, 16 to 24 year olds can visit www.freetest.me. The testing kit will arrive in the post in discreet packaging with a postage paid return envelope. Results and health advice will be issued by text message or email.

In 2015, the council reviewed chlamydia screening in Gloucestershire and found that some tactics such as grab bins with testing kits were not very effective.  The public health team knows from countywide surveys that people feel self-conscious talking about sexual health and many prefer to find information online.

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection, often seen in young people. Early identification can prevent complications and help stop more people becoming infected.

Cllr Andrew Gravells, cabinet member for public health said: “Chlamydia can be an invisible illness so it’s really important people get tested if they’re at risk.

“This is a really discreet way for people to test themselves.”
