A long weekend of events to celebrate women photographers is being launched in Gloucester on Friday 26th August.
UK charity Hundred Heroines is hosting photography exhibitions, artist talks and screenings until Monday 29th August. They will be joined by internationally renowned photographers at the Photo Gloucester event which will take over the top floor of The Eastgate Centre and other venues across the city.
Visitors can expect thought-provoking exhibitions with QR codes for the stories behind the photography and exhibits. There is also a ‘Selfie Room’ and international stars will be coming to Gloucester for discussions on all things women in photography. Visitors can respond interactively to the festival on a 30m blank canvas.
One of the exhibitions will be portraits by Gloucester’s best-known photographer Dorothy Wilding who established successful studios in both London and New York. Meryl Meisler, New York photographer is zooming in to talk about her quirky vision. From discos to high school life, Meryl’s work gives insight into life in the city in the 1970s and 1980s.
Other exhibitions will also include the interactive portraiture series Skin Deep by Ecuadorian artist Paola Paredes, which represents the dualities lived by LGBT+ people in Ecuador and there will be portraits by Madame Yevonde (1893-1975), who pioneered the use of colour photography in the mid-twentieth century.
Del Barrett, Chair of Hundred Heroines said. ‘We would love people to come along this weekend. You’ll get a brief overview of so many outstanding international artists both current and historical: women were pioneers but men took all the credit.
‘We also want people to come along and get involved. We have talks along with the exhibitions and you can take your own photos, print out and add to our community wall. We’re hoping Photo Gloucester will become an annual fixture in the city’s cultural calendar and to open again at Eastgate Shopping Centre after the weekend event.’
