Proposals show the future of A40 Over roundabout

Gloucestershire County Council is organising two events next week for residents and commuters to view and give their feedback on proposals for further improvements to the A40 Over roundabout.

The county council is proposing a second phase of work to widen the southbound approach to the A417 from Maisemore and westbound to the A40 from Longford roads and to the rest of the roundabout to make it three lanes the whole way around to provide additional capacity.

There will be two events held this week for residents and road users, at Hartpury Village Hall on Tuesday 20^th September between 9am – 2pm, and Highnam Community Centre on Thursday 22^nd September from 2.30pm – 7.30pm.

The A40 Over roundabout is on the northwest of Gloucester and is the main point of entry into the city from the west.

Highways England completed the first phase of improvement works in March 2015, including widening the A40 eastbound approach from Highnam to three lanes to allow a dedicated right turn lane, and the roundabout carriageway on the northern side.

The council believes this work will reduce congestion at this key ‘pinch point’ on the A40 and reduce journey times for road users.

Gloucestershire County Council will apply to GFirst LEP for funding, and hopes that improvement works will start in 2018, lasting around five months.

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure, said: “The A40 Over roundabout is a key part of entering Gloucester from the west of the city and as such we want to make sure that traffic is moving easily.

“As part of this, we want to make sure that those who use the roundabout and surrounding roads are able to see the plans and give us feedback on what they believe can and will make a real benefit.”
