Quayside and Blackfriars regeneration proposals – Have your say!

Gloucestershire County Council and Gloucester City Council are to unveil further information about the proposed redevelopment of the Quayside and Blackfriars areas of the city, and they want to know what people think.

People are invited to come along to a special drop-in event at Blackfriars Priory on Tuesday 20th September from 3.30pm to 7.30pm. Consultation material will be on display and members of the project team will be available to answer any questions about the development proposals.

A full public consultation will run from Tuesday 20th September until Tuesday 4th October.

In April 2015 funding of £4.13m was secured from central government and the GFirst LEP Gloucestershire Growth Deal 2015 to 2021 to prepare the site ready for redevelopment and to incorporate renewable energy generation into the proposals, helping the Shire Hall offices to become one of the most energy efficient buildings around.

Since the project was launched last year significant progress has been made. The disused police cells at the rear of Shire Hall have been demolished making way for new development. Archaeological investigations, site investigations and decontamination works have all been completed and new plans developed for the regeneration of this part of the city.

The development area will cover around 2.9 hectares of land across Quayside adjacent to the River Severn in the western part of the site and Blackfriars in the south eastern part of the site.

Following the initial consultation exercise carried out last year proposals have been developed that include provision of much needed housing for the city as well as student accommodation and other associated facilities.

Cllr Ray Theodoulou, deputy leader of Gloucestershire County Council said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the community to get involved and have their say on the future redevelopment and transformation of Gloucester city centre.”

Cllr Paul James, leader of Gloucester City council said, “It’s a really exciting time for regeneration in Gloucester and I encourage local people to take part and tell us what they’d like to see built on land at the Quayside and Blackfriars.”

All comments received will be reviewed and a further consultation will take place later in the year before the Local Development Order is submitted to the city council for determination.
