Renovation of Guildhall and Museum of Gloucester now underway

To keep Gloucester’s cultural venues thriving, two historically important buildings are being renovated by the city council.

Residents may have already spotted scaffolding around the Guildhall and Museum of Gloucester: both Grade II listed buildings are undergoing renovation works as part of the city council’s commitment to preserving local heritage.

Routine maintenance of the Guildhall identified the need to refurbish three of the high level Edwardian ‘Oeil de Beouf’ circular pivot windows. These will be removed and restored to their former glory, before being returned to the Guildhall and repainted in situ.

The building’s age and location in a pedestrianised area means sensitive working methods and extensive scaffolding are needed. The city council is taking full advantage by carrying out repairs and repainting of the exterior woodwork while the scaffolding is in place.

Thanks to the City Centre Investment Fund, over at the Museum of Gloucester, major repairs to the roof of the Price Memorial Hall are also underway.

“By carrying out this work on our complex and challenging, yet magnificent listed buildings, we can preserve an important part of the heritage of our city, to be enjoyed by future generations and encourage visitors to return.”
