Smoother, safer, better: Netheridge Swing Bridge to be resurfaced

A vital access route into Gloucester will be the focus of the county council’s latest resurfacing drive, giving motorists a smoother ride in and around the city.

Netheridge Swing Bridge on Secunda Way turned 10 this year, and is a key point of entry into the city. The popularity of this route has led to wear and tear, meaning that the road surface is at the end of its useful life.

To restore the bridge and help prevent further repairs, 50 tonnes of a new, hi-tech asphalt will be laid by contractor Amey. This pioneering new surface is specifically designed to move with flexible structures, such as bridges, to stop cracks and potholes appearing. This will reduce the need for future repairs and road closures – making life easier for motorists and reducing congestion in and around Gloucester.

Traffic in both directions will continue to flow over the bridge throughout the work, which will take place in stages from 11^th-23^rd February. Lanes will be closed to protect motorists while the old surface is removed from the steel deck and replaced.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood, said: “This major route into and around the city centre is an important asset for our city, connecting thousands of residents, commuters and visitors to Gloucester’s shops and historic centre every day. It’s crucial that resurfacing and repairs are carried out in good time in order to keep our county moving.”

Cllr Pam Tracey, county councillor for Westgate said: “I’m glad this new surface is being laid to maintain easy access over the bridge and nip future issues in the bud. Netheridge bridge is a well-used route, so this is great news for both residents and visitors to the city. I’d like to thank local people and visitors for their patience while we complete the work.”
