Staysafe patrols to help in fight against knife crime by Shaun Moore | Gloucester News Centre - http://gloucesternewscentre.co.uk/
New “Staysafe” patrols are to start tomorrow night in Gloucester in order to help combat knife crime.
Gloucestershire Police, Safer Gloucester, Families First and Gloucestershire Healthy Living and Learning are taking part in the new initiative, which will see the agencies talking to young people on the street, ensuring they are safe and offering help if they are vulnerable.
The hope is that the scheme will ultimately help prevent anti-social behaviour and in some cases identify and stop young people who may arm themselves with knives.
PC Helen Martin, who is helping coordinate the scheme said: “This isn’t about stopping young people having fun, it’s intended to ensure that activities and places that appeal to young people are safe and secure.
“Police officers, PCSOs, Specials and youth workers, all in plain clothes, will be taking part in patrols across the city and surrounding areas.
“We will be alert to young people who may be vulnerable because of drugs or alcohol or who may be in the company of adults adults who could be out to exploit them.
“We’ll offer support and a place of safety if needed but we will of course take enforcement action if we need to. We’ll also be talking to parents and carers about any issues they need to be aware of.”
Five patrols will take place across Gloucester between 7.30pm on Friday (22 July) and 2am on Saturday (23 July).
