History lovers and curious explorers are invited to uncover the fascinating Roman past of Gloucester through the Discover Roman Gloucester programme, a series of guided walks and special tours running from April to September 2026.

Hosted by Gloucester Civic Trust in partnership with Museum of Gloucester, the programme offers visitors the chance to experience the hidden Roman story of Gloucester with expert local guides.

Across a range of small-group tours, participants will explore remarkable sites and artefacts that reveal how the Romans shaped the city nearly 2,000 years ago.

Roman Gloucester Walks

Led by Civic Trust guides, these popular walking tours explain why the Romans established a settlement in Gloucester and how it developed into an important Roman city. Visitors will walk along the site of the Roman forum, explore the impressive Roman walls in the Eastgate Chamber, and encounter artefacts including mosaics, jewellery, weaponry and tombstones displayed in the museum. Roman Walks start at 10.30am on the following Fridays: April 17th; May 8th, 22nd; June 12th; July 3rd, 17th; August 7th, 28th; September 18th.

Discover the Eastgate Chamber

Hidden beneath the city streets, the Eastgate Chamber reveals layers of Gloucester’s history, from Roman defensive walls to a medieval gate tower and even a 16th-century horsepool. These special guided tours provide a rare opportunity to see this remarkable underground site and understand its role in the city’s past. Chamber Tours start at 11.00 am on the following Fridays: April 10th, 24th; May 1st, 15th, 29th; June 5th, 19th, 26th; July 10th, 24th, 31st; August 14th, 21st; Sept 4th, 25th.

Tours of the King’s Bastion

For those seeking a unique underground adventure, guided tours of the King’s Bastion take visitors beneath the King’s Walk Shopping Centre to see the remains of a Roman wall alongside a 13th-century defensive tower. Accessed through the floor of King’s Walk, this fascinating chamber offers an unforgettable glimpse into Gloucester’s historic defences. Tours start at 10.30, 11.10 and 11.50 on the following dates: April 14th; May 26th; June 16th; July 21st; July 28th; August 18th.

Spaces on all tours are limited to ensure a high-quality experience with knowledgeable guides, so advance booking is strongly recommended.

Tickets start from £8 for adults, with discounted prices for children.
