Work in the pipeline to make sure the A46 is stable for the future

The A46 at Coopers Hill is beginning to show signs of deterioration so Gloucestershire County Council is taking steps to keep it safe and keep traffic flowing.

In 2011 the county council carried out land stabilisation work and since then it has regularly monitored the area to check if the land under the road is moving any further.

A recent inspection found that more investigation work is needed to find out if any movement of the land under the road is the cause of problems on the road surface. The investigation will help the council decide if any further work is needed.

From Monday 24^th October detailed ground investigation work will begin and temporary traffic lights will be in place to keep the road open.

To help traffic continue to flow well through the area, the lights will be hand operated during peak travel times.

The investigation work is expected to be complete by Monday 7^th November.

Depending on what the investigation work finds, it may be possible to remove the temporary traffic lights at the weekends.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood said, “We want to keep people moving easily through Gloucestershire and as the A46 is such a major route, it’s really important we make sure it’s fit for the future.

“By investigating the land underneath the road we can fully understand the situation, and the cost, so that we can draw up some designs if required.”

Cllr Robert Vines, local county councillor for Brockworth said, “This is a popular road for local people and temporary traffic lights will help traffic flowing while the county council does the investigation work.”
