Having your traditional fish and chips in Ye Old Restaurant and Fish Shoppe is quite a unique experience as you’ll be pairing award-winning food with one of Gloucester’s most iconic buildings.

Being one of the top ten fish and chip restaurants in the UK, according to Fry Magazine, you can expect high quality from the Hare Lane premises. On the menu you’ll find all the fish and chip shop favourites from fish and chips to pie and chips, sausages, chicken and scampi. Traditional favourites include faggots and meat pattie with vegetarian options including spring rolls and pea fritters. All the fish is certified from sustainable sources.

Owners Shahram and Elham Navard took over the business in 2016, but the premises has been a fish and chip restaurant since the 1940s and is fondly remembered by many locals. It’s also a favourite of tourists and while Gloucester BID was visiting, we heard a customer say they were, ‘the best fish and chips’ they’d had for a long time!

Shahram said, ‘We love the business as it’s in one of the most iconic buildings in Gloucester. Fish and Chips is one of the most traditional businesses you can run in this country: it’s the nations favourite and here, you’ll have an experience as you get to eat them in a building which is 600 years old!’

The quirky building is full of old beams, wonky floors, objects and interesting pictures on the walls. It is in one of Gloucester’s oldest streets and is believed to have been built in around 1530.

Ye Olde Restaurant and Fish Shoppe is either sit-in or takeaway – scoring very highly on all the delivery apps. It’s best to book ahead on Gloucester Rugby match days as there are long queues.

Shahram said, ‘We are always full of Gloucester Rugby fans in their shirts. People have been coming from generation to generation. We also talk to many customers who first visited as children on the regular Saturday shopping trips to Gloucester. A fish ‘n’ chip lunch or supper was a treat and these lovely people now bring their own children and grandchildren to experience the tradition.’

Everything about the restaurant adds to its award-winning reputation: from a homemade batter to excellent customer service from loyal staff.

Shahram said, ‘When we took over the business the first thing we did was experiment with various batter mixes until we developed our current one which we believe offers everything you want from a batter – crispness, freshness and curliness!

As for customer service, we ensure that ours is of the highest order. The comments of our regular customers and testimonials prove that we are definitely doing something right. Many of our team have been with us since they were teenagers and some are even daughters of previous staff.’

We recommend a visit to Ye Olde Restaurant and Fish Shoppe and we’ll be back to try the pea fritters!
