Gloucester is set to shine a spotlight on its vibrant independent business community during Independents Week, running from Monday, June 30 to Sunday, July 6, 2025. Organised by Gloucester Business Improvement District (BID), this annual celebration aims to highlight the unique offerings of the city’s independent retailers, eateries, and service providers.
With over 300 independent businesses in the city centre, Gloucester boasts a diverse array of shops, restaurants, and services that contribute to the city’s unique character and economy. From boutique gift shops in the Cathedral Quarter and jewellers on Northgate Street to family-run eateries at the newly developed Gloucester Food Dock and waterside bars nestled into the historic Gloucester Docks, there’s something for everyone to discover and enjoy.
Throughout the week, visitors can look forward to exclusive deals, special events, and unique experiences offered by participating businesses. Highlights include:
-
Gloucester Food Dock: A culinary hotspot featuring independent food and drink outlets, offering special menus and tastings.
-
Cathedral Quarter: Home to charming independent shops like Faeluna, Pilgrims and Bizarre, perfect for unique gifts.
-
Eastgate Indoor Market: An Aladdin’s Cave of small businesses, including a butcher, fishmonger, sweet shop, haberdashery and Aladdin’s Cave!
Becci Zawadzki, Chair of Gloucester BID, emphasizes the importance of supporting local businesses:
“Local independent businesses are the heart of our communities. They drive economic growth and keep our high streets unique. Supporting them means investing in our local economy and securing the future of in-person retail experiences.”
Independents Week also serves as a platform for businesses to showcase their stories and contributions to the community. For instance, Kara Hair & Beauty, one of the city’s oldest salons, continues to invest in apprenticeships, nurturing the next generation of local talent.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore Gloucester’s independent scene, take advantage of special offers, and participate in events throughout the week. A full list of participating businesses and their offers can be found at gloucesterbid.uk/independents-week.
