Gloucester is celebrating as it proudly receives the Purple Flag accreditation, a recognition of its commitment to creating a dynamic, secure, and vibrant evening and night-time economy. Purple Flag – similar to the Blue Flag for beaches – aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 5 pm and 5 am. This prestigious award highlights Gloucester’s blend of entertainment, dining, and culture, all while ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and visitors in the evening and night time economy.

Key successes in Gloucester’s submission include the transformative development of the new city centre student campus and the successful completion of the Eastgate Street Gate project, which
together drive economic growth and enhance evening management through bolstered engagement with the University and local businesses. This progress is matched by a commitment to safety,
highlighted by the opening of the Night Angels safe haven hub and the delivery of Suzy Lamplugh Trust and WAVE training.

In addition to Gloucester, we celebrate 1 area receiving its first Purple Flag, 4 areas receiving a Full Renewal accreditation, and 4 areas receiving an Interim Renewal accreditation. There are over 90 Purple Flag destinations around the globe across the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Malta, New Zealand and Australia. This includes world renowned tourist destinations to small market towns.

Emily Gibbon, manager of Gloucester Business Improvement District says: “It’s wonderful to have gained the Purple Flag accreditation for another year. The Gloucester stakeholders involved with Purple Flag, and all those who contribute to the superb offering that the city’s evening and night-time economy delivers, alongside the dedication of our partners and businesses, continue to make Gloucester a safe, vibrant and welcoming destination for residents and visitors alike.”

Purple Flag has represented the gold standard of evening and night time economy management for 16 years.
