Our City Protection Officers (CPOs) have been hard at work throughout April, helping to keep the city centre safe, welcoming, and supportive for everyone. From assisting vulnerable individuals to tackling shoplifting and anti-social behaviour, their efforts continue to make a real difference in our community.

During April, CPOs carried out a wide range of activities across the city:
• Over 550 visits to local businesses
• Conducted 369 welfare checks to support vulnerable people
• Responded to 97 police CCTV incidents
• Dealt with shoplifting, street drinking, and anti-social behaviour on a daily basis
• Recovered over £1,200 worth of stolen goods and returned them to shops
Their visible presence in the city centre helps deter crime while offering reassurance to residents, workers, and visitors.

Supporting People Who Need It Most
A key part of the CPO role is looking out for people who may need extra help. Throughout the month, officers:
• Carried out regular welfare checks on people sleeping rough or in need
• Provided information on food, clothing, and support services
• Helped individuals access medical care when needed
• Assisted in locating missing or vulnerable people
In several cases, officers delivered first aid and stayed with individuals until emergency services arrived.

Working with Local Businesses
CPOs continue to work closely with shops and businesses to reduce retail crime. In April, they:
• Responded to numerous shoplifting incidents
• Recovered stolen items and returned them to stores
• Helped identify repeat offenders using CCTV
• Supported police with statements and evidence
This partnership approach helps protect local businesses and creates a safer shopping environment for everyone.

Addressing Anti-Social Behaviour
Officers regularly deal with issues such as street drinking, aggressive behaviour, and public disturbances. In April, they:
• Moved on groups causing disruption
• Confiscated alcohol where appropriate
• Helped prevent fights and de-escalate tense situations
• Reported incidents and shared information with police
Their quick response often prevents situations from escalating further.

Working Together to Keep the City Safe
CPOs work closely with partner organisations including the police, local outreach services, and community groups. Weekly meetings ensure everyone stays informed and can respond quickly to emerging issues.
A Safer City for Everyone
The work of the City Protection Officers is about more than enforcement, it’s about supporting people, building relationships, and helping the city centre feel safe and welcoming for all.
If you see a CPO while you’re out and about, feel free to say hello, they’re there to help.
