More than 120 people are opposing plans to turn a historic former Gloucester bakery into flats.

Developers want to convert the former Sparkes Bakery in Tredworth.

Their proposals include changing the use of 63 Ryecroft Street from retail/warehousing into residential.

This includes raising the roof, a two storey side extension with an underpass to create four one bedroom flats and three two bedroom flats with associated car parking.

Consultants working on the scheme say the proposals will help the city meet its housing target. “This development will help to add to the ever increasing demand of housing and off course support local businesses,” they said.

“This proposal has been considered in the context of the policies and guidance referred to below and not only provides a great improvement to street scene but as whole gives a new lease to the run down site.”

However, many residents are concerned about the impact it will have in an already densely populated area as the plans only include parking space for four vehicles.

Councillor Shamsuz Zaman Litu (C, Barton and Tredworth) presented a petition against the proposals to Gloucester City Council at their meeting at North Warehouse on January 26.

He said: “It’s our job to look after the ward we represent. This ward is very densely populated for extra flats.

“My ward residents led a petition with 128 signatures objecting to the planning permission for the flats in relation 63 Ryecroft Street.

“Myself and Cllr Sajid Patel have also submitted our objections as the local councillors.”
