Gloucester Rhythm and Blues Festival returns to delight music fans across six days at the end of July.

Now celebrating its 20th year, the R&B Festival runs from Tuesday 26 July to Sunday 31 July across Gloucester. 61 gigs take to the stage at 10 venues including: Angie’s Bar, Pilgrims Yard, Café René, The Tall Ship, Dean’s Walk Inn, Soundhouse, Fountain Inn, The Turk’s Head, Pelican Inn and Gloucester Brewery.

There are over 48 different bands and acts taking part in the festival including: Maxwell Street Blues, James Oliver Band, Whiskey River Boys, The Hush, Blue 2 The Bone. Alice Armstrong Band, Eddie Martin and Alex Chapman.

The Gloucester Rhythm and Blues Festival was launched in the city in 2002 at Café Rene. It’s one of Gloucester’s most popular music events and is supported by Gloucester BID.

BID Director Toby Wooldridge said, ‘We have more acts and venues on board this year, which is great as it brings the businesses and community together. Now, with extra days, the Gloucester Rhythm and Blues Festival is going from strength to strength.’

Mike Hall at The Pelican Inn said, ‘We are totally exhilarated to be part of this years’ R&B Festival! So many great venues all pulling together with excellent music all over the city. This is our first year of involvement, so I’ve booked Rev Ferriday (7pm Fri) and Whiskey River (4pm Sat) who played regularly at my previous pub. The Hush (7pm Sat) are my neighbours so I know how brilliant they are. I’m hoping our blend of fabulous ales, banging blues and chili-con carne (served from 6pm Fri, reordering recommended) will add something magical to this wonderful community event.’

Rhythm and blues, a popular music genre combining jazz, gospel, and blues influences, is a musical term for post-war musical chart listings which mainly encompassed the rich and varied folk music of the African Americans as well as other Americans.
