The victim, aged in his 20s, flagged down a passing motorist near Gloucester Park just after 8pm tonight.
The motorist drove the man to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and while it was initially believed his injuries may have been life threatening they have now been confirmed as serious but not life threatening. The victim will remain in hospital overnight and will then require further treatment on his hand.
The incident is believed to have taken place close to a zebra crossing in the Park Road/Wellington Street area and officers have cordoned off the possible scene while an investigation continues.
