Visitors are invited to experience a truly unique celebration of maritime heritage at “Shanty in the Dock,” part of A Weekend by the Water at T. Nielsen’s Historic Dry Dock in Gloucester.
Taking place on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 April, this special event offers a rare opportunity to descend into the bottom of a working dry dock, an experience not often open to the public. Surrounded by towering dock walls visitors will gain a striking, ground-level view of traditional boat repair station.
Dating back to 1818, the dry docks remain fully operational today, forming a direct link between Gloucester’s industrial past and its present-day craftsmanship. Here, boats are still carefully hauled out, balanced on timber blocks, and restored using time-honoured skills passed down through generations.
Adding to the atmosphere, a full programme of live music will fill the dock throughout the weekend, with sea shanties and folk performances echoing through this historic setting.
