Gloucester Rugby player Danny Cipriani will appear in court after being arrested and charged with assaulting police at a nightclub.

The incident happened at a venue in the St Helier area of Jersey in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police on the island said he had been charged with common assault, larceny, assault on police, resisting arrest and being disorderly on licensed premises.

The 30-year-old has been remanded in custody to appear at Jersey Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

He was in Jersey as part of pre-season preparations with club side Gloucester, who he joined from Wasps this summer.

The Premiership outfit said they were aware of the incident.

“Gloucester Rugby are aware of an incident involving Danny Cipriani in the early hours of Wednesday morning following an incident at a St Helier nightclub,” said a club statement.

“He was arrested and has since been charged by police.

“The club will be issuing no further comment at this time but will make a further announcement in due course.”

Cipriani had just returned to the England squad and last week vowed to do “everything I can” to remain part of the team.

The fly-half made his first Test start for 10 years against South Africa in Cape Town in June and is due to begin the domestic season with his new club at home to Northampton on 1 September.
