Making the most of Gloucester’s heritage

Throughout March Gloucester City Council is asking the public to have their say on the city’s heritage strategy. 

An online consultation has been launched to gather feedback and suggestions on the draft heritage strategy for 2019 – 2029.

The aim of the strategy is to ensure heritage is weaved into all aspects of city life from culture to regeneration, tourism to economic development.

The strategy has been written in collaboration with local and national heritage organisations, including Gloucester Culture Trust, Gloucester Civic Trust, Gloucester Historic Buildings Trust, Gloucester Heritage Forum, and Historic England.

The consultation follows on from June 2018 where the council asked for thoughts and perceptions on heritage and its role in the city from a wide range of stakeholders such as residents, businesses, tenants, developers and visitors to the city.

The strategy has been funded as part of the key strand “Achieving Regeneration in the City through Heritage” (ARCH) within the Great Place scheme, funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England.

The draft strategy, background document and feedback form is available online at: www.gloucester.gov.uk/heritagestrategy. The consultation runs until Sunday 31st March.

Cllr Paul James, leader of Gloucester City Council, said: “This strategy will determine what the council and its partners will do to ensure we make the most of our heritage in the widest possible sense. I know how passionately people in Gloucester feel about the city’s heritage, so it’s important that they let us know their thoughts.”

Cllr Lise Noakes, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “The historic environment is central to Gloucester’s culture, status, and sense of place. I hope local residents can find the time to complete the online questionnaire and give us their views.”
